Kerala-based startup Stem Systems Pvt. Ltd. is making a strong impact in India’s aquaculture sector with its innovative and sustainable crab farming solutions. Founded in 2022 by fisheries graduates Arun Das and Aswathy T from Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), the company aims to help farmers earn better incomes through modern seafood farming techniques.
Startup Introduces Space-Saving Crab Farming System
Based in Ernakulam, Stem Systems has developed a unique mud crab fattening system using Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) technology. The biggest advantage of this model is that farmers can grow crabs commercially in a space as small as 10 square feet.
The company has also created a hybrid shrimp farming system that combines biofloc technology with traditional RAS methods to improve production and efficiency.
Technology Makes Crab Farming Possible Inland
One of the startup’s major innovations is Aquamin, a special artificial brackish water solution. This product allows farmers to raise crabs even in inland areas where natural brackish water is not available.
Stem Systems has also developed specialised crab feed, mineral supplements, and water management products that help improve crab growth, health, and survival rates.
Export Market Driving Business Growth
The company follows a crab fattening model where soft-shelled crabs are purchased and grown in controlled farming units. Within about 20 days, the crabs become larger and develop hard shells, increasing their market value.
According to the company, a large crab weighing around 1.2 kg can sell for up to ₹2,800 in export markets. Most of the crabs produced through these systems are exported, with China being one of the key buyers.
Training Farmers and Creating New Livelihoods
Farmer training is a major part of Stem Systems’ work. Led by Director Aswathy T, the company has trained more than 4,000 farmers across Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra.
The training programmes cover crab farming techniques, feeding practices, disease management, grading, and packaging. As a result, nearly 120 farmers have started their own crab fattening businesses, creating new income opportunities in different regions.
KUFOS Receives ₹10 Crore NITI Aayog Support
The startup’s success comes at a time when KUFOS has secured a ₹10 crore grant from NITI Aayog under the Atal Innovation Mission. The funding will be used to establish India’s first Atal Incubation Centre focused on fisheries and aquaculture.
The project is being led by Dr. Radhika Rajasree with support from KUFOS Vice-Chancellor A. Biju Kumar and Registrar Dinesh Kaippilly. The incubation centre aims to encourage research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the fisheries sector. As one of the first startups supported under this initiative, Stem Systems highlights how technology and innovation can help strengthen India’s growing blue economy.
